I think he was being sarcastic. He said, "Since you're all just being so kind right now, I suppose I'll prepare a statement."

That's what I was thinking. But it may just be the "being so kind" part that was sarcasm. He knows people wants a statement and the least he could do is at least let people know why their dreams were crushed.
