Ok we just spent an hour figuring out how to run vmk on my friend's windows 8 computer that she just updated to 8.1. if anybody else is having trouble here's what we did.
install the latest version of shockwave from adobe.com, go to the downloads page and download the newest shockwave flash, not regular flash player.
after it finishes installing it will download it's shockwave video and say 'installation complete' then load an ad with a little piggy bank, i can't remember what it actually is lol. right click somewhere in this ad and choose properties. UNCLICK the option saying 'make backwards compatable' or something similar and then try to open the game. i tried changing every other setting i could find, but this was the only change that actually worked.
